What the Camillus replacement exemption actually turns on
Chapter 26 of the Town of Camillus code, revised in April 2026, requires a building permit for work that must conform to the Uniform Code or Energy Code, then adopts the optional exemptions, among them replacement of equipment where the replacement does not alter the equipment's listing or render it inconsistent with the original specifications. The chapter also states that the exemption is not an authorization to perform work in violation of the Uniform Code or the Energy Code, so it changes the paperwork rather than the standard of the work. Put the listing question to the town and to the contractor before you agree the job, because it also decides whether an independent inspector ever sees the installation. The Town of Camillus Chapter 26, Uniform Code Enforcement, revised 4/14/2026, states at section 26.30(A) that a building permit is required for any work which must conform to the Uniform Code or Energy Code, including the construction, enlargement, alteration, improvement, removal, relocation or demolition of any building or structure, and the installation of a solid fuel burning heating appliance, chimney, or flue in any dwelling unit.
