Furnace replacement is the removal of an existing forced air furnace and the installation of a new one, together with everything the new appliance changes around it: the gas connection, the flue or vent route, the condensate drain on a condensing model, the electrical supply, the plenum connections at the cabinet and the thermostat. Two decisions carry the whole job. The first is the size, which section M1401.3 of the Residential Code of New York State says is arrived at by selecting equipment under ACCA Manual S from a load calculated under ACCA Manual J, and which in practice is frequently copied off the nameplate of the unit being carried out. The second is where the exhaust goes. Oak Ridge National Laboratory records that a condensing furnace cannot use the vent the old furnace used, so a new route has to be built, and that a gas water heater which shared the old chimney is left on a flue whose cross section was sized for two appliances.

A boiler heats water or makes steam and sends it out to radiators, baseboard or floor loops. It is a different appliance from a furnace, it is replaced differently, and in this part of the country it is far more common than national content suggests: the Energy Information Administration puts 27.9 percent of Middle Atlantic homes on a steam or hot water system against 7.5 percent nationally. Central air conditioning installation covers the outdoor condensing unit, the matched indoor coil sitting in the furnace or air handler airstream, the refrigerant line set between them, the condensate drain, the electrical disconnect and circuit, and the controls. An air source heat pump is one machine that heats and cools, moving heat rather than burning anything, and it is installed either through ducts or as ductless indoor units. The whole question in this climate is capacity when it is cold. The Department of Energy defines the balance point as the outdoor temperature at which heating capacity matches the home's demand, and states that below it the heat pump cannot fully meet the load without a backup source. Syracuse gives that question a shape: the normals record 7.1 nights a year at or below 0F and 57.5 at or below 20F, while section 27-54(a)(2) of the City of Syracuse Property Conservation Code judges heating capability against an outside temperature of minus ten degrees Fahrenheit. So the honest version of this purchase is not whether a heat pump works here. It is where the balance point lands, what runs below it, and what that costs you across a winter.

It covers designing a duct system for a new or replacement system, putting ducts into a house that has never had any, correcting trunks, branches and returns that were undersized or added piecemeal, sealing and insulating duct that runs through unheated space, and installing ductless equipment where building a duct system is not sensible.
