Ductwork and Air Distribution Around Skaneateles Lake
More than half the village was built before 1940, which usually means there is no chase, no easy route and a real choice to make about how air moves.

No chase, no easy route: distribution in prewar Skaneateles
The Census reports the median year built in Skaneateles village as 1939 or earlier, with 735 of 1,353 units in that bracket, while the town's median is 1956 with 36.6 percent prewar. Housing of that age rarely offers a convenient route for a trunk, so the distribution conversation here is genuinely a choice rather than a default: build a duct route and accept which ceilings and closets come down, or fit ductless equipment in the rooms that matter and leave the plaster alone. Both answers are legitimate, and a contractor who names only one of them has decided something on your behalf before looking properly.

What ductwork involves

Choosing between a duct route and a head in the room
Which office you deal with depends on the boundary again. The Town of Skaneateles Building and Codes Department publishes its own applications and its Codes Enforcement Officer is reachable on (315) 685-0833, while the village runs separate permit instructions with their own insurance and signed proposal requirements. Get the answer before the scope is agreed. On the work itself, ask whether the duct design exists on paper: NYSERDA names Manual D alongside Manual J for the load and Manual S for the equipment when instructing contractors to do their own sizing rather than use rules of thumb, and Manual D is the half homeowners are never offered.
Village instructions or town applications
The two Skaneateles offices ask for different things, and which applies depends on which side of the line the house sits.
Ask for Manual D on paper
NYSERDA names it with Manual J and Manual S. A duct layout that exists as a drawing is the difference between design and habit.
Name what gets opened
In prewar lakefront housing the ceilings and closets in the scope, and what making good covers, decide both price and disruption.

The Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump Specification Version 4.0, facilitated by Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships and effective January 1, 2023, defines a voluntary set of performance and reporting requirements designed to identify air-source heat pumps that heat efficiently in cold climates, which it defines as IECC climate zone 4 and higher. For central air conditioning heat pumps it requires a coefficient of performance at 5F of at least 1.75 at maximum capacity operation, HSPF2 of at least 8.5 and SEER2 of at least 15 for non-ducted systems, and HSPF2 of at least 7.7 and SEER2 of at least 14.3 for ducted systems. It requires the compressor to be variable capacity, meaning three or more distinct operating speeds or continuously variable, and requires units to hold a rating under AHRI Standard 210/240. It states that the specification is intended as a model equipment specification used by energy efficiency program administrators as a minimum requirement for program qualification.

NYSERDA instructs contractors to conduct their own sizing calculation and product selection using an industry approved method such as ACCA Manual J, S and D, and to avoid using rules of thumb or replacing a system for a like-sized system without completing their own sizing calculation. It adds that even if the previous system size was appropriate when it was installed, the home may have undergone weatherization or other improvements, and that many fossil-fuel furnace and boiler systems are oversized themselves.

Duct and ductless questions from Skaneateles
I do not want ceilings opened. Is ductless the answer?
It often is in this housing, and it is a recognized equipment class rather than a compromise: the cold climate specification publishes separate performance thresholds for ducted and non ducted systems. What decides it for your house is the wall runs, where the indoor units can sensibly sit, and where an outdoor unit can stand clear of snow.
Do I go to the village or the town about duct work?
Whichever your address falls in, and they are genuinely different. The town's Building and Codes Department publishes its own applications and is reachable on (315) 685-0833; the village has its own permit instructions with insurance and signed proposal requirements. Establish the boundary before the scope is agreed.
Village or town, and which room
